Solar, batteries or mains power?

Choose a practical power arrangement before relying on headline battery-life claims.

Researched guide · 19 October 2026 · How we research

Think about access and position

How difficult will it be to reach the camera for charging or battery changes? Is there an appropriate power route? Where could a compatible solar panel sit? These questions can rule out an unsuitable setup before you compare camera specifications.

Solar is a charging option, not a guarantee

Check whether the panel is supplied, which models it supports and whether the camera can still be charged another way. Winter light, shade, installation angle and recording activity are reasons to keep a charging contingency. We have not measured solar charging or battery life for these products.

Battery questions to ask

  • Is the battery removable, and can it be replaced?
  • Which rechargeable or disposable batteries does the manufacturer approve?
  • Can the camera report a low charge before it stops recording?
  • What settings were used for any advertised battery-life figure?
  • How is the charging port protected after use?

Mains and cable planning

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for supplies, extensions and outdoor connections. A weather-resistant camera body does not make every cable joint weatherproof. Get qualified help where an installation needs electrical work.

Compare effort as well as cost

A cheaper battery model may be inconvenient if it is hard to reach. A connected camera may be unsuitable where neither power nor internet is practical. Compare the maintenance routine you can manage, and check results before relying on the installation for a whole season.
